The Agricultural Commission Steering Committee will hold a public meeting tonight at Frothingham Memorial Hall on Barrows Street at 6:30. This group has been charged with the job of creating an Agricultural Commission for Easton that will promote all things agricultural in Easton from backyard chickens and community gardens to farmer's markets and government grants to support farms.
In honor of the meeting I'm providing a link to the USDA Rural Atlas. This provides interesting information at the county level all across America. For example, did you know that in 2007 11.1% of the land in Bristol County is in farms? By the way, the USDA defines a farm as any property that produces $1,000 worth of agricultural products. Almost 30% of farm operators in Bristol County are over 65 years old which makes finding young operators like the folks at Langwater Farm imperative if we want to prevent farmland from becoming housing developments.
